OUBEY MINDKISS

An expanding universe

The Discovery of a Hidden Art Treasure

Persistent and uncompromising, dedicated solely to his own artistic vision – this was how OUBEY, voluntarily isolated from the public, created an unmistakable, multifaceted and incomparable oeuvre over the course of 25 years. Uninfluenced by the art business, OUBEY created over 1000 pictures with an astonishing, creative force in the greatest possible inner and external freedom.

When OUBEY started thinking about an exhibition again for the first time in a long time, he lost his life in a traffic accident in August 2004 at the age of 46.

The project MINDKISS posthumously realizes his plan, now opening a door for the first time, five years after OUBEY’s early and untimely death, to the hidden treasure he created and left behind. The book MINDKISS, the experience film OUBEY, and the web site OUBEY.com are the first steps along the way to a long-term goal.

This goal consists of presenting the originals of OUBEY’s pictures permanently in an exhibition, in which the mental context in which this art was created can be understood and experienced at the same time.

Further publications and actions will follow continuously in the coming months and years. Visitors to the web site OUBEY.com will be regularly kept up to date about these, so that they will be able to experience the development of the project close up.

If you would like to participate in the MINDKISS Project, feel free to subscribe to the OUBEY Newsletter or visit the OUBEY Blog!

The People Behind

THE Project MINDKISS demonstrates that what at first appears impossible can be done

Dagmar Woyde-Koehler

Dagmar Woyde-Koehler lived and worked with OUBEY for over twenty years. Following his death in a car accident in 2004 she founded the OUBEY MINDKISS Project which she has run ever since.

She has been producer and director of the "Encounters with OUBEY" series of short videos which document the encounters of people from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures with a painting by OUBEY they have never seen before. With the Global Encounter Tour she created a wider-ranging resonance space for the direct and unfiltered encounter of a great many people with a larger number of OUBEYs paintings. To date this Tour has made eight stopovers in seven countries on four continents: Africa, New Zealand, North America and Europe.

Stefan Sagmeister

One of the project partners from the beginning was Stefan Sagmeister, who is one of the most important designers of our time. He did design work for Lou Reed, Talking Heads, Rolling Stones, Brian Eno and David Byrne and received various renowned awards, among of them two Grammies and the “Lucky Strike Design Award 2009” for his life’s work. With the book MINDKISS that he designed together with his team colleagues Roy Rub and Seth Labenz, he created a congenial and spectacular framework for the first public look at OUBEYs multifaceted and complex work. The Book was awarded with "red dot", AIGA Design Award and the "Award of Excellence" of the "Communication Arts" magazine.

Bernd Mueller

Bernd Mueller (“asif:filmmatters”), and Lars Eberle (“lessrain”) from Berlin created an experience film with their teams, which opens up to the viewer an extraordinary and personal encounter with OUBEY, granting access not only to the person, but also to the mental sources, from which OUBEYs work arose. The sonic figures that imbue this film with a rhythm all its own are the result of the participation of the wellknown French composer and musician Kangding Ray.

The film had its premiere at the launch of the MINDKISS Project on 23 March 2010 at the Center for Art and Media Technology (ZKM) in Karlsruhe. It was exclusively presented at the stopovers of the OUBEY Global Encounter Tour and at the media center of ZKM in Karlsruhe during Project´s 5thAnniverary Happening on 5 May 2015.

Christoph Brosius

If OUBEYs paintings where something to play with, how could someone interact with them in a playful way? Christoph Brosius of Circumradius found the answer to this unusual interesting question when working together with Jan Bubenik and Julian Adenauer to develop the interactive "OUBEY Digital Discovery" (ODD) installation. Movement of a "magic bowl" changes the virtual light falling on OUBEYs paintings, revealing their inherent complexity and three dimensionality and spectacularly changing their colors and structures - an experience which could only be had with long hours of viewing under natural light conditions.

His more than fifteen years of experience in game developing, filmmaking and advertising were basic ingredients for the creative process of conceiving the OUBEY Digital Discovery.

Ole Leifels

Ole Leifels is a photographer and co-founder of the interactive agency Kubikfoto³ in Bremen, which has developed software that is unique in the whole world. With this software it is possible to realize interactive Flash worlds based on photos, called Kubikfoto³. Using this technique, he has designed a virtual 360 degree visit to OUBEY’s studio for visitors to the web site.

The possibility of being able to move almost completely freely enables visitors to the web site to authentically experience the dimensions and the atmosphere of this space, in which OUBEY last worked. Various interactive functions react to a mouse click, inviting visitors to come closer, discover and stay.

Vito Bica

Vito Bica is the designer who did the latest relaunch of this website and is working on an experimental version which will follow the principles of playful exploration as they are ingredient of OUBEYs artistic work.

He holds a master degree in media arts and media theory (ZKM/HfG Karlsruhe). But his story begins earlier in his childhood between self-written applications on Amiga OS, books and lingerie. In 2009, he co-founded Space Bonding – a tech startup for collaborative urban development – where he led business strategy and product development.

In 2014, he founded his own studio in Berlin.

About the book

The MINDKISS book shows roughly 100 pictures from OUBEYs artistic oeuvre, thus opening up a first view of OUBEYs extensive work comprising a total of over 1000 pieces.
In each volume, 19/21 pictures are shown in full page format. The typography for the titles, like the entire book design, is from Stefan Sagmeister and was specially developed for the MINDKISS book. Each book opens with its very own, glowing color atmosphere, which the texts of each book also follow.

The short texts are scattered between the pictures, always following the same principle: each volume opens with an original quotation from OUBEY. This is followed by a quotation from a book or a poem that was especially significant for OUBEYs thinking and work. The third text takes a look behind the scenes and explains how the pictures in this volume were created. At the end of each volume there is a tabular overview with detailed information about each of the pictures shown.

Experience Film

This experimental short film by Bernd Mueller undertakes an initial approach to OUBEY and the secret of his art. It follows the traces of his thinking and his creative work, taking the viewer along on a journey into a world full of surprises, but still left in the magic of its complexity. A world that OUBEY newly opens up to the viewer through his art again and again. If you want to enjoy the full sound experience we recommend to use loudspeakers or a good headphone. The Super 8 and video material used for the film has been treated using a computer program, so that the images dissolve again and again into dynamically flowing pixel streams, accompanied by the French composer Kangding Ray´s soundtrack of sound-images. Sound and vision of the film are interactive: they can be manipulated by moving the mouse.

The original image and sound recordings used in the film are presented to the public for the first time in this film. They come from the archive of the Atelier O.U.B.E.Y. and let OUBEY speak – not only in his own words but in some parts also with his own voice.

Vision

OUBEYs artwork finds a new and final homeplace, inviting and attracting curious and open-minded people to see his original work, surrounded by lots of experiencal exposures of familiar and connected disciplines: science, music, poetry, spaceflight, astrophysics and cosmology, science fiction, evolution and technology, brain research and palaeanthropology. A place and space of joy and insight – the joy of insight, for old and young ones, transcending the limitations of different cultures and languages. A place and space where “OUBEYs World” gets physical for everyone who enters this world and will be happy to have been there when leaving it, which means that they never really leave or lose it again.

An Element of the Universal

“I hope that my paintings will be equally fascinating to an Eskimo, an Australian Aborigine and a New Yorker”.

OUBEY 1992

To find out whether this idea of the German artist OUBEY really can stand the hard test of reality, his long-time companion and partner Dagmar Woyde-Koehler has been travelling the globe for some years now with OUBEYs pictures.

Complexity’s Spell

A three minute short film, “OUBEY & Complexity”, has been made especially for the Vienna stop-over which offers unusual insights into some of the key elements of OUBEYs art.

OUBEY Encounters – THE JOURNEY

Dagmar Woyde-Koehler, who lived and worked together with OUBEY for 21 years, established the OUBEY MINDKISS Project after his untimely death with the aim of opening up OUBEYs work to broad new audiences outside the circuits of the commercial art world.

With the Encounters, she’s now found her own special way of achieving her goal. She arranges “rendezvous” between OUBEYs paintings and a wide range of different people from across the world including many famous researchers and (natural) scientists but also artists and children too. Spontaneously before the cameras, they talk about the thoughts and associations triggered by their first view of the painting, and in doing so open up unusual unexpected perspectives on OUBEYs art. The edited versions of the Encounter films are presented online at www.oubey.com/journey.

The Journey is a documentary film that accompanies Dagmar Woyde-Koehler on her travels with OUBEYs paintings throughout the world and gives an inside view of her work in this project. It had its first public screening in March 2013 at the Berlin stopover of the GLOBAL ENCOUNTERS TOUR.
