OUBEYs Paintings Enthusiastically Received by the Maori in Aotearoa New Zealand

“It was a bold and exciting adventure whose outcome was by no means certain”, says Dagmar Woyde-Koehler, who sent a few weeks ago six of OUBEYs paintings on a very long journey to encounter the students, teachers and guests of the Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Nga Mokopuna Maori school in Wellington/New Zealand on 9 March during the school’s annual festival.

The resonance was overwhelmingly positive. That OUBEYs paintings proved to be fascinating, exciting and comprehensible for the Maori, a people with their own strong cultural traditions, is more than encouraging for the OUBEY Encounters Project. Wherever they may travel in future, the memory of this extraordinary unique encounter with the Maori will accompany them on their way.

OUBEY, WE and the Arts

DAS LEBEN WÄHRT KURZ, DIE KUNST WÄHRT LANG

OUBEYs Leben endete vor 15 Jahren, am 2. August 2004, abrupt und brutal. Er saß ahnungslos in seinem Smart, der auf dem Seitenstreifen stand, als sich ein 40-Tonner von hinten näherte und ungebremst mit 90 km/h in ihn hineinfuhr. Dieser Aufprall endete für OUBEY tödlich. 

Der Mensch, mit dem ich bis dahin 21 aufregende und wundervolle Jahre verbracht, mit dem ich so viele Gedanken und Gefühle geteilt, mit dem ich eng verbunden und im Gleichklang gelebt hatte, war von einem Moment auf den anderen nicht mehr da. Und sein Wunsch, nach einem zwölfjährigen Rückzug aus der Öffentlichkeit seine Bilder wieder zu zeigen, schien unerfüllt zu bleiben.
